Gift From Land

A retrospective exhibition of permaculture farming project

Our Gallery is delighted to collaborate with C.C. Wu Cultural and Education Foundation Fund, Sangwoodgoon, Mapopo Community Farm, and Society for Indigenous Learning on this retrospective exhibition of Gift From Land.

Gift From Land was one of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2015 projects. The Triennale is one of the largest art festivals in the world. Gift From Land intends to investigate how human and land live together in perfect harmony and embodies the cultural exchange between Hong Kong and Japan. This exhibition will present the journey of Gift From Land project with the intention to introduce permaculture farming.

What is Gift From Land?

The Gift From Land project, initiated by C. C. Wu Cultural and Education Foundation Fund, is an ongoing project emphasising on agriculture, art and education. It was one of the projects in Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale 2015 and obtained the support from the Triennale committee. Hong Kong permaculture advisor Yuen Yic-tin and artist Yeung Sau-churk were invited as project consultants. They led a team of more than 80 members, including farmers, students, and volunteers to Japan for participating in a six-month exchange programme. The team applied permaculture principles to farming and shared the permaculture philosophy with local communities through cultural activities.

Gift From Land intends to investigate how human and land live together in perfect harmony which can be achieved by practising permaculture. The team believes proper natural resources management can benefit future generations. Besides the continuous support of the farming programme in Japan, a book titled “Farmers’ Horizon: Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, Urban x Rural, Japan x Hong Kong Connect” will be soon published in order to capture the project vision. Gift From Land also collaborates with SoIL (Society for Indigenous Learning) this year to promote permaculture programmes in Hong Kong.

As the saying goes, “the creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn”. If Gift From Land is an acorn, we hope this acorn will sprout and grow stronger.
