When adversity strikes, people often feel that at least some part of them – be it their views of the world, their sense of themselves, their relationships – has been smashed. Adversity can lead to enormous psychological suffering. Not everyone experiences full-blown post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), but most people will develop some of the emotional turmoil of posttraumatic stress following adversity. We all must face difficult events in our lives. What has happened cannot be undone. Our only choice is how to live with what has happened.
Mardi Horowitz proposed adjustment to trauma consists of five phases: outcry, numbness and denial, intrusive re-experiencing, working through and completion. Twelve of CUHK art students interpret the phases of adjustment to trauma through the form of art intervention. They wish to help people to understand their own emotions and overcome adversity.
